Ms. Tutu is a Project Coordinator of AID-Comilla, located in the Comilla District, 100 kilometers from Dhaka city.  She supports and encourages the people of this region, forming them into groups who can be provided with training in education, savings and loans, environmental hygiene, and home gardening.  Large scale farmers own the majority of the land, but constitute only 10% of the population.  Furthermore, they use a great amount of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.  Ms. Tutu is also concerned about the severe socio-economic situation for women and children of poor families.  At ARI, she would like to learn from the many people from different countries who participate in the program.  She wants to enhance her capacity to conduct training for community people and for her co-workers.  She is particularly interested in gaining knowledge about organic farming since she plans to conduct ecological agriculture programs and home gardening programs after ARI.

AID Comilla - Association for Integrated Development Comilla

Association for Integrated Development-Comilla (AID-Comilla) was established in 1992 to improve the socio-economic status of underprivileged men, women, and children, both in urban and rural areas.  They organize people and provide them with non-formal education about how to effectively utilize their own existing resources.  The core purpose of AID-Comilla is to alleviate poverty and to empower powerless people, especially women. They accomplish this through teaching money saving habits, raising awareness on gender issues, and through credit programs.  People are educated on prevention issues such as child trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and drug abuse.  In Bangladesh where 80% of the people live in rural areas and where poverty is the highest in all of South Asia, these programs help people move towards health and self-reliance.
