Work

As Assistant Farm Manager of SEWA Lanka Foundation’s demonstration farm, Mr. Nagulenthiran Nallathamby manages the vegetable gardens and the income generation fields.  His work includes coordinating workers and managing the farm accounts.  He also works as Senior Field Officer in the Vavuniya District for the people who had to resettle due to the civil war.  He provides people with agricultural tools, seeds, and fertilizers, and tries to bring about social mobilization among them.  He is also working for reconstruction of people’s lives in Tsunami affected areas.

At ARI, he wants to learn more about home gardening.  He regards home gardening to be especially important for rural women, as it provides fresh and healthy food for the family and it gives satisfaction to the women who produce these crops through their own efforts.  He wants to learn sustainable farming methods and plans to hold sessions to educate the people on the dangerous effects of overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.  He would like to bring awareness to the whole community through developing a model home garden.

Organization

SEWA-Lanka Foundation

SEWA Lanka Foundation began in 1993 as a developmental NGO with a mandate to address the needs of the most vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka. As conflict arose in the north and east, it provided immediate humanitarian assistance in these areas. When conditions improved, it developed strategies to address the long-term needs of these communities. It has become an internationally recognized organization for its work in development and has built a team of professional men and women, including Sinhalese and Tamil, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian - working together to create, implement and maintain programs to assist communities to grow strong and healthy.  In response to the Tsunami disaster, SEWA Lanka staff in eleven coastal districts immediately took action to aid the people in the worst affected areas.  Through continuous support for the victims, it has developed a greater capacity to deliver both emergency and long term support to communities throughout the country.
