Work Position : Assistant Pastor

Work

Rev. Matondang serves the congregation of Persiapan Ressort Immanuel in Sibolga which includes 750 households.  Although 90% of the people in Sibolga depend on agriculture and fishery, the reality is that they are not capable of producing enough produce to meet the needs of their own households.  Furthermore, the fisheries are nowadays dominated by well funded Chinese companies.  He feels the need to empower the local people so that they can utilize their local resources to improve their living conditions and build a better society.  He has already started a small demonstration field for vegetable gardening which Sibolga people can learn from.  He has also been working with the Wakachiai Project, which helps provide livestock to farmers.

In ARI he wants to broaden his knowledge and skills in organic farming.  He is also looking forward to the learning opportunities that arise from living with people of different religions, as the majority of the people in Indonesia are Muslim.  After ARI training, he plans to train the local people to utilize their fields for organic farming.  He wants to be a good motivator for his community.

HKBP - Huria Kristen Batak Protestant Church

Begun in 1911, Huria Kristen Batak Protestant Church (HKBP) is a large organization in Indonesia consisting of 157 full time employees and approximately 5000 part-time workers and volunteers.  Their mission is to empower the poor and the oppressed by providing them with the knowledge and training they need to lift themselves up.  They promote organic agriculture, as a means of independence, and teach them how their harvest can be best used to provide both food for the family and small income.  They are also dedicated to serving women; working to ensure that they are treated with fairness and dignity.  HKBP is a strong force for Christians living in Indonesia.
