Work

Mr. Veasna Ouk works in an area where there are a great number of poor socially vulnerable people such as the landless, returning refugees, and disabled.   But he sees in them a willingness to work hard for a better life.  Therefore he seeks to learn more about suitable strategies and technical methods to assist these people. As an agricultural officer of the Lutheran World Federation, Cambodia (LWF-Cambodia), he is an assistant to the Project Coordinator to manage and organize food security programs and environment and agro forestry activities in the Teuk Phos District, Kampong Chhnang Province.  He has introduced concepts and practices of integrated farming systems several farming households.  After ARI, he will share his knowledge and experiences with LWF Cambodia staff and the communities where LWF is working.  In his future, he would like to bring about new skills and methods directly to his communities through sustainable programs together with the people’s participation.

Cambodia remains strong, with thirty six percent of the population living below the poverty line. Most of the poor live in rural areas and face extraordinary challenges daily, such as landmines, food shortages, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, poor education, and limited access to water. The Lutheran World Federation Cambodia program works with vulnerable groups, such as poor farmers, households headed by women, landless families, returning refugees, internally displaced persons, rural youth, and people with HIV/AIDS in remote and isolated areas. The program has evolved since its start in 1979 just after the Khmer Rouge Regime.  In the early period they worked in the agriculture and water supply sectors to support the central government.  In 1995, they started community based activities with Integrated Rural Development Projects.  Since 2003, the emphasis of the program is empowerment of communities for their own sustainable development, combined with rights based integrated development and advocacy approaches.
