Work

Inspired by ARI Graduate Rev. Tigor Sihombing, the Rev. Bahara Sihombing wishes to help teach his rural congregation how to better farm their land and produce a sustainable income for their families. Rev. Tigor Sihombing has helped form workshops instructing parishioners in organic farming and the making of charcoal. Seeing how farmers began to successfully implement Rev. Tigor Sihombing’s training, Rev. Bahara Sihombing is eager to continue this momentum and build up his rural community’s capability to more effectively produce food and market their goods.

As a farmer’s son, Rev. Sihombing’s familiarity with agriculture helps him work alongside his parishioners, over 85% of whom rely on farming as their only source of income. He sees a great need for improved cultivation methods in his rural village, especially in over-reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. When he was a young boy his family lost an entire rice harvest when a mouse infestation devastated their land. Rev. Sihombing wants to help others learn effective methods of pest management that do not harm the environment.

Organization

In a country rebuilding from the terrible damage of the 2004 tsunami, Huria Kristen Indonesia seeks to follow Christ’s example of servitude. HKI engages in many forms of assistance with special emphasis on agricultural development. Nearly three quarters of the Indonesian population live in rural areas and grow some of their own food.  Therefore in order for the church to respond to the needs of the people they provide training in farming techniques, animal husbandry and fishing as an integral part of their ministry. Additional activities include urban mission and ministry as well as development of social welfare, family health, and home industries.
