Work |
Having grown up in the Panti Asuhan Elim orphanage since the age of five, Emmy Rajagukguk strongly values the importance of fellowship and taking care of others. With the love and support of Huria Kristen Batak Protestant she was able to grow into a strong young woman and an accomplished teacher. Now she works with orphans and abandoned children on a four hectare farm, teaching organic agricultural techniques and marketable handicraft skills such as sewing and flower decoration. Together the children produce food for their daily meals and learn skills that will enable them to build meaningful futures. In addition to her duties at Panti Asuhan Elim, Ms. Rajagukguk is deeply involved in women’s issues in her surrounding community and is currently helping to form a women’s labor union in the local factories. She would like to expand on her current work and teach women how to start their own small home industries and market their domestic products while managing to save money through a cooperative credit union.

Sending Organization |
Huria Kristen Batak Protestant is the largest protestant church in Indonesia with over 3.5 million members. The Panti Asuhan Elim Department Diakonia of HKBP is located in a largely impoverished semi-urban area in Sumatra. While only about 15% of the local community depends on farming as their primary source of income, farmers are reliant on costly chemicals for raising their crops, which turn out only a tiny profit. Many children at Panti Asuhan Elim have been orphaned or abandoned by families overwhelmed with hunger and poverty. At the orphanage children receive a warm, caring home, and are provided with education that helps raise them out of the cycle of poverty to help them become more independent and self sufficient.
