Work Position : Social Worker and Secretary

Work

Born and raised in the rural region of Manipur in Northeast India, Ms. Khaling saw how all of the villagers were dependent on agriculture for survival but never seemed to get ahead for all their hard work. As members of her hill tribe, the Khoibu people, moved to urban areas to seek a better life, Ms. Khaling began to build her life around the idea that development is achieved not through acquiring more money and material goods, but by learning to value and efficiently utilize the resources that you have. She believes knowledge is the difference between rural people becoming further impoverished and building life that is self reliant and content.

At the Dorcas Noble Fund, Ms. Khaling’s work focuses on vulnerable women and children. As a social worker and secretary, she coordinates development efforts, such as organizing farming and income generation workshops for widows, and conducting fundraising for scholarships for women and drop-outs to return to school. Working with her church, other NGOs, and community based organizations she is constantly seeking out new opportunities for bettering the lives of the Khoibu people.

Organization

Based in the Chandel District, a hill region close to Myanmar, the Dorcas Noble Fund (DNF) is modeled after the example of Dorcas, who is depicted in the Bible in Acts 9:36 as a woman who did good works for orphans and widows. Serving the most disadvantaged members of society, DNF provides educational opportunities for women and children. Specifically, they give training in handloom weaving so women may learn a marketable trade, kitchen gardening for home consumption, and medicinal plant cultivation. DNF is currently expanding a home for orphans and drop-outs, and provides ‘vocational Bible study’ where children can be introduced to the stories of the bible while training in technical skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
