Work |
Having grown up in the rich cultural traditions of the Shan people, Mrs. Kyi has been dedicated to serving her tribal community all of her life. As a Baptist Minister, Mrs. Kyi spreads the gospel and sees to the needs of her congregation, and as the Department Director for the Christian Social Service and Development Department; she coordinates community development and social welfare. In both of these roles, Mrs. Kyi visits members of her congregation daily, rotating her schedule so that she can keep in touch with the needs of her people. Nearly everyone in Mrs. Kyi’s congregation relies on their own small farms to provide food and an income for their families and she is often asked to lead her community as both a farmer and a minister. Shifting cultivation (or slash and burn farming), a practice often sited in widespread environmental degradation and pollution, is still practiced in Myanmar. She hopes to open a demonstration field school to teach better methods of agriculture that will ensure better health for the land as well as the community. Furthermore she hopes provide workshops on natural disaster prevention and relief planning, as landslides and floods are a major concern.
