Work

As a boy Mr. Lacaya was not given money for Christmas, but instead received a chicken as his gift. He raised his chickens from small chicks and when they had grown and hatched their own chicks, he gave his cousins and neighborhood children their own chickens to raise. This childhood experience has stayed with him all of his life and kept Mr. Lacaya close to his rural village when many young men and women left for larger cities.

As a member of the Guinles Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Mr. Lacaya helps these farmers implement methods of producing better crops and livestock. Few of the farmers who are part of the cooperative own their land, but work on leased land in the hope of producing enough food to both feed their families and make an income. Unfortunately, the soil is infertile after years of chemical and mono-crop farming, and due to deforestation the region is prone to flash floods and landslides. In the face of these obstacles, Mr. Lacaya is committed to working for a better future for his community.

In addition to his work in the cooperative, Mr. Lacaya teaches music at a local public school. He is involved with several choirs and enjoys performing with his church. He is also involved in youth leadership and helps with the local 4-H program.

Organization

The Guinles Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GUIFAMUCO) seeks to uplift farmers by supporting them with agricultural training in a spirit of unity and cooperation. More than just workshops, GUIFAMUCO also provides assistance in agricultural projects like construction of irrigation systems, helping farmers with facilities after their harvests, and sessions on other livelihood projects, such as production of handicrafts, that can ring in extra income. GUIFAMUCO does its best to effectively respond to the needs of its members and encourages this whole rural community to adopt an environmentally friendly and positive attitude towards farming.
