Work

Rev. Nababan is a rural pastor and a farmer. In addition to his responsibilities in his church, he goes out every day to work on his farm and visit nearby farmers and talk with them. “The most joyful thing for me is when I work with the community, listening to their problems and their burdens, because of our economic situation, and discuss the way they should be taking to overcome their problems.”

The biggest struggle that they are facing is the environmental destruction caused by a pulp factory in the village. “Because of their [pulp factory] activities,” he explains, “our forests have become destroyed, the air is polluted and smelly, and many people who stay around the factory have gotten diseases. Our paddy fields also became contaminated and the harvest from the paddy fields is going down.” Rev. Nababa is supporting those who are protesting against this factory to let all in the region understand that “the impact of this factory is very dangerous to the environment, human beings, and the next generations.”

In this line, Mr. Nababan has a keen interest in organic farming. HKI has a hope to establish a new training center wherein the learning Rev. Nababan receives at ARI will be of benefit to his congregation and the whole community. “I hope to be a completed person to serve in a rural area.”

Sending Organization

Huria Kristen Indonesia (HKI) – The Indonesian Christian Church – provides many forms of assistance with special emphasis on agricultural development. Nearly three quarters of the Indonesian population live in rural areas and grow most of their own food. Therefore, in order for the church to respond to the needs of the people they provide training in farming techniques, animal husbandry and fishing as an integral part of their ministry. Additional activities include urban mission and ministry as well as development of social welfare, family health, and home industries. Another goal of HKI is leadership development for the church members, especially the women and the youth.
