Work
Ms. Rana comes from a community composed of diverse ethnic groups and different castes, thus making her job of bringing the people to work together a challenging one. The people Ms. Rana works with are primarily tribal women and farmers. She supports these groups with training in income generation activities such as mushroom farming, food processing, and sewing. In addition, she encourages farmers to create home gardens to ensure there is food on their tables, even at times there is no money in their pockets. “Rural women have a lot of work inside the house but don’t get money for this work,” explains Ms. Rana, “They are supporting their husbands as a servant and don’t have chance to work outside. Women have to change their role and capacity from their house to improve.” Ms. Rana wants to improve her leadership skills in order to help the women discover new confidence and independence through generating small incomes on their own. She would also like to learn more about sustainable agriculture, including understanding the impact of chemical farming and what the alternatives are. With her sending body, Ms Rana plans to start a small integrated demo farm in the local community. |

Sending Organization
The Sustainable Agriculture Promotion Center (SAP-Center) is a ‘learning by doing’ Nepali NGO established in 2007. As a non-profit, non political women’s organization the purpose is to work with the people to reduce poverty and improve the agriculture skills of small landholder farmers. They have built a deep water irrigation system and are developing integrated organic farming establishing markets for organic produce in the region. In one of its small communities, the SAP-Center has helped its 25 members to start a savings program which enabled it to give credit to several members to start a handicraft making project for income generation. The SAP-Center also conducts non-formal education classes. |
