Ms. Kunwar is a social mobilizer in the Chittapol Village Development Community which is an agricultural community in which people suffer from poverty and lack of education. These people have difficulty in organizing and mobilizing themselves because of the discriminatory caste system and lack of cooperation between ethnic groups. Ms. Kunwar organizes people, especially the poor and marginalized, into groups that will work together. She helps them analyze the problems of the community and plan how to address these problems together. “One of my responsibilities,” she explains, “is to understand the demands of each group and try to provide appropriate training and materials through my organization that can improve their living standard. Some examples of trainings include: candle making, integrated pest management, mushroom growing, and off season vegetable growing. The examples of provided materials include: spray pump for farms, metal boxes to keep seeds, plastic sheets to collect waste water and rain water for farming, water pipes to create irrigation, and candle making machines.” She also provides awareness programs on human rights and women’s health. She is concerned about the lack of environmental awareness of the people and wants to learn about organic farming and promote organic farming in the region. |
