Farewell to Rev. Kenichi Otsu
Rev. Kenichi Otsu, Chair of ARI Board of Directors and Trustees, passed away in the afternoon on Thursday, 22 June 2017 at the Red Cross Hospital in Otawara, Tochigi prefecture, Japan. He was 73 years old.
Rev. Otsu was born in Osaka, Japan, graduated from the theological division of Doshisha University (M. Th.) and Pacific School of Religion (CA, USA, M. Div.).
An ordained minister of the United Church of Christ in Japan (UCCJ), he served as former Executive Secretary for Development and Service of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), Director of Japan Christian Academy Kanto Activity Center and Chairman of the Public Affairs Committee of World Conference of Religions for Peace, Japan, etc. At ARI he was Director of the Rural Leaders Training Center between 2009 to 2015 March and became Chair of the ARI Board of Directors and Trustees in June 2012 taking over from Dr. Akira Niwa who had passed away.
The funeral was attended only by Rev. Otsu’s family members based on his wishes and presided by Rev. Hyunwook Ban of Nishinasuno Chuch (UCCJ, ARI Grad 1983). Also, Rev. Otsu requested, “Have a farewell service at ARI when cosmos flowers are blooming.” ARI plans to have a memorial service on Sep. 18th 13:30 – 15:00 at Koinonia hall on the ARI campus.
